ADAPTATIONS

The STEP framework is from PHE Canada and describes activity components that can be modified to meet the needs of each individual participant and provide a supportive learning environment.

SPACE
TASK
EQUIPMENT
PEOPLE

SPACE Adaptations

  • Flags or markers placed to assist with navigation.

  • Use clear markings, cones, ropes, symbols, and floor lanes to support orientation and focus.

  • Increase space of movement for skills (to support mobility aids to move).

TASK Adaptations

  • Sensory awareness: whistles, yelling, etc.

  • Visual support boards to articulate drills, schedule, and rewards.

  • Visual and auditory cues (where to aim for, and cones or tape for directional support).

TEACHING CUES FOR MOVEMENT SKILLS

JUMP
LEAP

JUMP

  • Stand with feet shoulder width apart.

  • Knees slightly bent in a “ready position”.

  • Swing arms back, then forward, to generate momentum (as you bend down).

  • Both feet take off and land at the same time.

  • Push off your toes to generate power, land softly by bending your knees.

LEAP

  • Start facing forward and use running steps to lead into the leap.

  • Take off on one foot, extend your legs into a split lunge position mid-air.

  • Cushion your landing by bending your knees.

  • Keep your head up and eyes looking forward.

FROG JUMPS

  • Students squat down low and "jump like a frog" forward.

  • Use poly spots or hoops as "lily pads" to jump to.

  • Variation: Let them choose short or long jumps.

RAINBOW LANDING ZONE

  • Create colorful landing spots using mats or poly spots.

  • Students choose which color they want to jump to (near or far).

  • Encourages choice and goal setting.

JUMP & REACH CHALLENGE

  • Place ropes, lines, or cones, on the floor at different distances.

  • Students try to jump past each line, at their own pace.

  • Everyone celebrates personal achievements rather than comparing distances.

TARGET JUMP

  • Place a beanbag, stuffed animal, or small toy on the floor.

  • Students try to jump close to, or over, the target.

  • Seated or wheelchair option: Roll or push an object forward toward the target instead.
