CBC News: BC Today Every Athlete Belongs: The OneAbility Games Come to Richmond
OneAbility Games Director Andrea Carey joined CBC's BC Today to discuss the inaugural OneAbility Games, taking place May 13–17 at the Richmond Olympic Oval. Andrea shared how her decade on the Canadian Paralympic Committee board opened her eyes to the lack of accessible sport programming for youth with disabilities and how a visit to Montreal's Défi Sportif Altergo Games in 2018 inspired her to bring something similar to the West Coast.
The five-day event will welcome approximately 900 students with disabilities to try seven adapted sports alongside elite competitive athletes, with national championships in wheelchair basketball, goalball, and blind hockey also taking place. Andrea emphasized that the Games are designed as a gateway to sport, introducing kids to different activities and connecting them to programs like Let’s Play for wheelchair basketball.
With school culture already shifting through OneAbility Game's educator programming and PLAY resource hub, and interest growing from other provinces, Carey's vision is clear: a national movement where every person with a disability has a place to belong in sport.
